2015 – Acting director of “RI cardiology”, Tomsk
S.V. Popov is one of the leading specialists in Russia in the field of the clinical electrophysiology. The main topics of his research work are the study of heart arrhythmias electrophysiological mechanisms and the search of new methods for its diagnostics and treatment (drugs and surgical ways). He defended Ph.D. thesis “Comparative efficacy of paroxysmal tachycardias termination by different pacing methods” in 1988 and the thesis for a Doctor’s degree “Electrical methods for diagnostics, drug therapy monitoring and treatment of paroxysmal tachycardias and tachyarrhythmias” in 1996. In 2000 he was awarded the academic title of “Professor”.
As a Deputy Director on research and clinical work, S.V. Popov forms research ways for the whole institute. He leads innovative projects in the development of alternative methods for the prevention and treatment of the chronic heart failure and the heart rhythm disorders using cellular technologies (clinic-experimental research).
S. V. Popov actively promoted the development and implementation of new methods in the science and practice. He formed his own arrhythmological school. The network of arrhythmological departments in Siberia and the Far East was established under his leadership. The unique electrophysiological systems for the diagnostics and high-tech interventional treatment of arrhythmias were also developed, brought to the serial production and implemented under his leadership in more than 30 medical centers in different regions of Russia and CIS countries.
S. V. Popov for the first time in Russia developed and implemented a method of the radiofrequency endocardial ablation of cardiac arrhythmias, implanted biventricular pacemakers and the new generation of defibrillators for the treatment of patients with the severe heart failure and the life-threatening arrhythmias. He performed the original methods of intracardiac radiofrequency ablation procedures in patients with the atrial fibrillation, different forms of atrial tachyarrhythmias and the congenital cardiac arrhythmias, including the children of the first year of life.
S. V. Popov is a Deputy Chairman of Russian society for clinical electrophysiology and pacing, member of the Coordinating Council on surgical and interventional arrhythmology of Federal Arrhythmology center, a member of the editorial boards of “Siberian medical journal”, a leading international journal of the arrhythmological community “PACE” (Pacing And Clinical Electrophysiology, USA), the international journal “International Journal of Biomedicine” (USA), Deputy editor of the journal “Bulletin of Arrhythmology”, member of European society of cardiology and European association of arrhythmologists.
Professor S. V. Popov is the author of more than 800 publications.Since 2011, S. V. Popov is a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the specialty “c
ardiology”.
