1982-1993: Chief Medical Officer at Aarhus Municipal Hospital and Skejby Hospital.
1994-2011: Chief Executive Officer at the Cardiologist Department of Gentofte Hospital, where he was specifically responsible for pacemaker operations, curative treatment of rapid life-threatening heart rhythms and the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).
Poul Erik Bloch Thomsen has been a consultant at several heart departments in Northern Europe, where he has trained younger colleagues in the above treatments and is internationally recognized for his research.
